Stop. Right now just stop. Take a deep breath. And simply look around.
Sometimes we get so wrapped up in life that we forget to breathe. We have to survive the morning commute and day at work. Entertain the kids. Check our email. Our Facebook. Our Twitter. Our Pinterest (because OMG Pinterest is addicting!!!). Check our desktops, laptops, iphones, & ipads. We have to take care of of our husbands/wives. Nurture our children. Play nice with our friends and coworkers. And then in the midst of it all we realize we have been holding our breath. Our shoulders and neck are tight and tense, we need a massage, a trip to the chiropractor, a yoga session, and a spa day, RIGHT NOW.
Or we can just pick up our camera instead.
Take a good look at your mess of dishes in the kitchen sink, the clutter of toys strew across your living room floor, the pile of bills on your desk yet to be paid or filed away. Embrace it all. Yes you heard me right. Embrace it! And now go get your camera and photograph it.
WHAT?! You want me to take a picture of my MESS?
Yup.
Take a deep breath. A walk around the house. And some time to re-focus.
One of my all time favorite photography exercises is making the ordinary look EXTRAORDINARY. In 2009 when I was working through my photo-a-day project I often found myself taking pictures of my dinner, our furniture, or decor. And as I did that, I began to realize the importance of layering photos with the texture of our life. Pile of messy dishes and all.
My new class Radiate is going to bring a community together ready to celebrate the texture of our lives and re-discover JOY amongst the beautiful mess.
Because as you work on looking closer and deeper into what surrounds you, you begin to breathe a little more. You begin to gain a fresh perspective. Maybe you’ll begin to notice the way the light is beautifully streaming through the windows, the intricate detail of the drawer pulls on that disorganized desk, or the colorful the arrangement of food canisters on your kitchen counter.
Can you see the texture of your surroundings with a fresh pair of eyes today? Can you make your ordinary look EXTRAORDINARY?
