The Moms Guide To Photo Editing l Part I

This is Part I in a 3 part series on photo editing for moms. Need to catch up? You can read Part II right HERE or Part III HERE.

With shot lists left and right tucked away in my camera bag, I’ve got a dream index of images I’d love to capture of our family’s summer adventures this year.

Having lists helps me feel prepared for photo worthy moments and keeps me on target to shoot and then put the camera away and stay present with my family too.

But beyond the lists, there is still so much to keep track of with photography. Once our desired shots are scribbled away scraps of paper or in our brain there is still the job of choosing the right camera, lens, light, posing, and settings to get those top shots nailed.

Have you ever mentally beat yourself up if you missed images on your dream lists, or they turned out less than perfect?

I know I have.

But, then I learned that when working with kids (especially our own) we HAVE to let our expectations for our photos go.

Just because you have access to a professional camera, that doesn’t automatically equate to professional shots all the time.

sooc_edit_4Over the last few years I’ve discovered that EVERY photographer (yes even pros) take BAAAAAAD photos. Ones that are underexposed, overexposed, or where the color is just off.

The thing that truly sets an amateur apart from a pro however, is the ability to fix a less than perfect photo using editing!  I promise photo editing is not cheating. Especially when it means the difference between keeping a shot or throwing it away.

In the age of digital photography there will ALWAYS be throw away photos. It’s too easy to press ‘delete’ and keep on moving.

But I would venture a guess that many of the photos you may think of as ‘throw aways’ could in fact be salvaged with a few minor editing tweaks. sooc_edit_1Over the next several weeks I’m going to share those tweaks with you in a multipart blog series.  We’ll explore some of my ‘trade secrets’ if you will.

I’ll share some super simple and easy editing techniques, the ones I apply on all the images I want to keep, the good ones and the ones that appear to be throwaways.

If you think you need expensive software, or superb technical skills to participate in this blog series, think again. Take a peek at my photo editing sites just for moms, and start playing this week.

We’ll be using a few of these sites as we learn, and they are all completely free or low cost!

sooc_edit_3As you anxiously await next week’s post (The 3 C’s of Clean Editing) I also want to invite you to kick off your adventures in photo editing by downloading the first chapter of my e-book, ‘Shades of Me’ for FREE.
