How not doing it all leads to great photos

Last week I made mention of how it’s important to dig into the heart of our photography journey and explore deeper instead of wider to fully expand our knowledge in one area instead of trying to bit off more than when can chew at once.

This is true when it comes to learning the ins and outs of our camera but it’s also true for our overall photo journey as well.

So often we moms can find ourselves feeling out of balance (if it’s winter where you are right now, you probably know this feeling well).  We juggle too many balls and wear too many hats. Our schedules are full and our brains are at capacity. Life with kiddos can be challenging enough, but add our own interests and hobbies in there and it gets even more challenging.

How do we find balance between documenting our life, learning our camera, editing the images, and preserving our memories? There’s only so much time in a day and even though photography is the perfect creative outlet for us moms while raising kiddos, there are so many moving pieces to bring our hobby full circle.

What if I told you that you don’t have to do at all, all at once.

Just as a winter of indoor hibernation will make way for warmer spring days, we can allow the pendulum of our photography experience to swing from one season back to another.

One season you might learn how to use your DSLR.

The next you put that camera away and opt for the easy phone capture.

Then it’s onto editing all those images.

Or preserving them in print for your family to enjoy.

The seasons may overlap, but one might dominate for awhile and that’s ok. The beauty in all of these seasons is that by allowing them to unfold naturally, there’s a layer of self-discovery hidden in each and every one.

Keep on reading below for the 4 seasons I’ve experienced in my own journey. While you read be thinking about which season you’re in right now, which one you could use the most, and if there’s any you might add.

Learning

When photography first piqued my interest as a new mom I wanted to in soak in everything I could about taking pictures. I had this brand new DSLR camera, I was clueless about how to use it, and I wanted to save some money on professional photography by DIYing my own beautiful images. I dove headfirst into learning all about ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, White Balance, Focus, and more. It was all about carrying my DSLR around with me wherever I went, trying my hand at new photography projects to practice, and snapping LOTS of photos.

Documenting

After awhile you may grow tired of carrying a DSLR everywhere. Or perhaps a DSLR isn’t in your family budget. But you still love documenting your family and telling a story. So you choose to capture your memories through the lens of your mobile phone camera instead. This opens a new world of creative control through exploring composition and light more. Plus there’s a TON apps at your disposal to take these snapshots up a notch.

Editing

You’ve taken the photos and now they live on a memory card or hard drive. Your happy with some of them, but know that with some editing knowledge they could be even better. Editing is a season in and of itself though because there’s new technology skills to be learned. Fortunately, sites like Picmonkey.com exist to decrease the learning curve a tad. But knowing the right steps and where to start to take your images from drab to fab takes time and patience.

Preserving

Lastly and most importantly is taking all those fabulous photos you’ve snapped through the years and getting them printed! This unfortunately is a season many of us don’t make time for. But if we can let go of the other 3 for just a short period of time and focus on this one, it’s where the real magic happens. Because there is nothing better on this photography journey than seeing your family’s eyes light up when they flip through books or albums of your images printed and preserved for the generations to come.

Is this your season? Embrace might be the experience for you.

Do you experience photography in seasons? If so, what season are you in right now? Is there a season you haven’t explored enough? Or one I haven’t listed here? Tell me about it in the comments.
