Finding your calling.
Knowing your purpose.
Discovering and uncovering that aching feeling deep inside you that there’s more to life. There has to be.
We all feel that drive, that longing inside us of knowing what really is our calling.
What we are most passionate about.
Sometimes your calling comes in small whispers for what you should be doing to connect more with others and how you can play bigger than you are right now (opening a collective workspace for creative business owners is topping my list right now).
But finding your calling isn’t easy.
Especially when you try to push the whispers away.
Finding Your Calling: The 5 Questions that Hold the Key
I realized something as I sat in a tattoo artist’s chair battling my fear and silencing those little voices in my head.
As she shared her story of finding her calling after being an art teacher for years, I realized that this whole journey of figuring out our deeper purpose, our calling actually, comes down to 5 key questions.
1. What lights you up? Excites you? Fills you with a tinge of fear but thrills you too?
Our passions define our purpose. The things that light our lives up, that fill us with excitement and fear, at the same time.
What is it that sends a rush of excitement down your spine and has you longing to experience it?
What is the thought, the one that keeps coming back to you, even when you stubbornly try to push it away?
Finding your calling requires tuning into yourself, your intuition and your soul.
2. What would you love to do, day after day? In the midst of all the everyday errands and chores?
Dig a little deeper and think about what would have you jumping out of bed, raring to go, filled with purpose and focus.
What would you love to make time for? What would you enjoy doing even if you weren’t paid for it? Or praised for it?
Your calling doesn’t always have to be noble {no harm if it is!}.
It can be simple, sweet and sentimental and tailored to your season of life too.
3. Growing up or even now, who are the people you truly admire for who they are? What is it about them that gives them a special place in your life?
Who are the people you look up to? What lessons have you learned from them?
For me one of those people was my Dad who unlocked the door to chasing my passion and purpose.
Then there are the coaches and mentors I’ve worked with along my journey who inspired me to live my dreams and craft my entrepreneurial lifestyle.
Who is it for you?
4. When you look around your home, what do you have an abundance of? What do you enjoy looking at the most? Cherishing and holding on to?
Even if you live a minimalist lifestyle, you will have an abundance of the things that delight you. These can be material or non-material. Reflect on those. Look around you. What are you surrounded by?
At a sub-conscious level, we surround ourselves by what we resonate the most with.
What are the books you always find yourself reading? What movies make you pause? Peel back the obviousness of entertainment and uncover what really draws you to these.
5. What would you do if you knew no fear and had all the possibilities to choose from?
Possibility is where you take control of your actions. Possibility is where you embrace the fear and the opportunity. Possibility is how you find your calling.
Finding your calling when you’re a mom can mean thinking about things while you make dinner AND answering phone calls, changing diapers AND clicking pictures of the kids as they play.
Yes, even if you can’t take a full day out to ponder these questions, spend time thinking about them as you go through the day.
Discuss your thoughts with your partner, friend, mom or sister.
Speak them out loud.
That’s where the magic happens.
Let them simmer awhile, soak in and ripen and when they do, they will help you understand yourself better and find who you are, why you’re here and what you’re doing.
It’s a season finding new callings here too. I’m currently in the process of beginning a small group virtual experience called the Resonate Intensive, mentoring and coaching women in finding their own calling and living a more passionate purpose filled live. Think this small group opportunity might be for you? Click HERE to send me an email and let’s talk about it.
