Beryl Young

Northern, Virginia (Western Loudoun)

Hi! I’m Beryl, founder of Recapture Self and creator of the Momtography® Method! I’m a former elementary school teacher turned creative business owner who learned back in 2009 the power of picking up a camera and how it can shape and transform your outlook as a mom. I live in a small town in the Northern most part of Virginia with my husband, our spunky 9 year old daughter, and our animals – two cats and one dog (who sometimes thinks she’s a cat too!). Keep on scrolling to get details about my next class (and register!), learn a bit more about me, and how Momtography® began!

my why

5 years ago I was sitting where you are right now. At a computer, looking for the perfect class that would teach me how to use my camera to take stunning images of my growing family. I was itching to get out of AUTO mode and learn to capture professional quality photos of my family on my own. After years of taking classes that left me underwhelmed, and reading forums and books that were overwhelming, I developed a class of my very own, Momtography®.

Family life is busy, and fast paced, and fleeting. I know moms want to not only beautifully capture their memories, but also do it in a way that allows them to be present with their loved ones too.

Momtography® LIVE is the jumpstart class I created to help moms beautifully capture what matters in their life!

3 fun facts

What’s unique about YOU? I’m so excited to find out in our afternoon together. Until then, this is ME!

I’m a personality test junkie and have been since middle school. My Myers Briggs type is INFJ – the rarest, most intuitive, yet oftentimes misunderstood type. I think my desire to dig deep into self-discovery and personality psychology (I was a Psych major in college) stems from spending most of my life not truly understanding myself. If you attend a future class with me, come prepared to not only learn about photography and your camera but to learn a little bit about yourself too!

My husband (I call him my Calmer) and I met when I was still in High School while working at our favorite store — Target! We used to joke that we should’ve had our wedding in a Target store, with a reception in the food court but that dream never came to be. However, you better believe that we do a weekly shopping trip there and we try to find and visit as many out of town stores as we can when on vacation or away from home. We used to have a goal to visit every Target in the US. But as they’ve grown as a company we’re not so sure that goal is a realistic one anymore!

I’ve lived with chronic illness since age 5 and I was the poster child for the National Arthritis Foundation Telethon when I was five years old. Even though chronic illness presents its share of challenges, I’ve never let it hold me back from big dreams. In fact I’ve been on a journey of trusting my body more these past few years, running my first 5k in 2014, my first 10k in 2016, and my first (and likely only) half marathon in 2018.
