Heather Salter
Walnut Creek, CA
Hi! I’m Heather and I am honored to have the opportunity to share Momtography™ with you! My day job is as Vice President of Operations at an engineering firm in San Francisco, but my heart is in capturing beautiful images of my family and friends and all our adventures. I have two crazy cute kiddos, one awesome husband, and a neurotic (but sweet) Bichapoo. I love burrito bowls, 80’s music, English Literature, and car dancing. When I’m not taking pictures or editing them, you can find me at the yoga studio, camping, drinking coffee, chasing after my kids at soccer and swimming, or at our local brewery. I love being outdoors, staying active, and connecting with new people. I’m a self-diagnosed introvert with a passion for people. Photo Credit: Aika Cardin Photography
my why
I’m here because, in photography, I have found a part of myself that went dormant when my son was born 5 years ago. Caught up in the logistics of our growing family, I stopped evolving as an individual and forgot to tend to my individual goals and creativity. When I figured out how to work the buttons on my camera, a whole world of creativity opened up for me, and (bonus) it was also a way that I could be creative while still connecting with my loved ones and preserving their special moments. I believe that creating is healing and that artistic expression is therapy for the soul. Maybe photography is your therapy – I’m excited to help you find out!
3 fun facts
What’s unique about YOU? I’m so excited to find out in our afternoon together. Until then, this is ME!
I’m Wisconsin born and bred! I grew up in a little town called Elkhorn right next to the beautiful historic town of Lake Geneva. My husband and I both attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison. ON WISCONSIN! My parents, brother, and extended family still live there. We love to visit, spend time on the lake, and enjoy the slower pace. On our last trip this summer, my 5 year old asked why Grandma and Grandpa don’t have a backyard. I responded that, of course they did! (They live on 5+ acres of land.) He responded that he was pretty sure that was a park and they just built their house on it!
I am deathly afraid of heights and spiders, but mostly heights. I volunteered as a counselor at a sleep-away camp with middle-school kids from our church one summer and had to complete a high ropes course with my group. I have never been more terrified in my life. There were several moments where I just did not think I was going to be able to do it. All the giggling 10 year-olds had to climb around me! A couple of weeks later, I found out that I was actually pregnant with our first baby while tackling that course. No wonder adventure is in his soul!
When I was 5, my Grandma took me along with her to her Senior Education Art Class while we were visiting them in Florida. I oil painted, created jewelry Christmas Trees, and learned how to throw pottery with all the ladies. I was reminiscing recently with my Grandma about those classes and she recounted how, for so many of those ladies, it was the first time they had an opportunity to do something creative and for themselves outside the home in a community of women. I refuse to wait until retirement to find my creative tribe! I credit Grandma for my appreciation of art and creativity. She taught me how to color in the lines, but also how to float your paintbrush to make your painting unique.
my next class
MOMTOGRAPHY™ IS THE BEGINNER DSLR PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS DESIGNED WITH MOMS IN MIND.
Designed for the busy parent, grandparent, or family member on the go, this 4 hour jumpstart course will deliver the basics to get that camera out of AUTO mode and working for you in any situation.
During your 4 hour Momtography™ class we’ll cover the following topics:
- Top 10 Tips for Taking Better Pictures of Kids
- Basic Photo Composition Rules
- Introduction to Exposure (why are my pictures from outside so bright and why are there so many shadows on faces?)
- ISO (why are all my pictures from inside the house so dark and grainy?)
- Shutter Speed (my baby is on the move and all of my photos are blurry!)
- Aperture (how can I take pictures when my kitchen is such a mess?!)
- Camera Settings
- Basic Lens Overview
- Backup, Printing, & Processing Overview
YOUR REGISTRATION ALSO INCLUDES:
- An afternoon away from the kids with the opportunity to meet and mingle with others who want to learn about their camera, just like you.
- PDF quick guides of all course materials, notebook and pen so you’ll be able to recall what you’ve been taught long after Momtography™ is over.
- Snacks and drinks to keep you energized and re-fueled for an afternoon of learning.
- Access to a private Facebook group after class is over to connect with other Momtography™ students and photo lovers so you’ll be able to keep in touch, share, learn and grow together as you continue practicing what you’ve learned.
Keep in mind: if you’re hoping to learn how to effectively use flash equipment to take photos at your cousin’s wedding next month, this might not be the class for you.
In 4 hours we only have time to touch on technical basics, and I personally take 99.9% of my own photos without flash. All that extra equipment is bulky, and requires time and patience to set up and use properly which isn’t always the best option when you’re a mom on the go.
Not to worry though, that tips and techniques shared during class will have you taking photos far more crisp, clear, bright, and beautiful than you imagined possible after 4 hours of learning!
