Let’s take a walk down memory lane today shall we? In 2010 I had the pleasure of photographing THIS amazing couple. (FYI – That link takes you to my old blog…the one where my portrait business once lived). They were just celebrating their one year marriage anniversary and I got to help them celebrate through photos. Fast forward 3 years and they are now the parents to one ADORABLE little girl. Tiffany and I recently reconnected when she registered for Momtographie and I’m SO thrilled to feature her here and see how much her photography has grown in only 3 short months since taking Momtographie class. Let’s meet her, shall we?
Name
Tiffany
Camera/Lenses
Nikon D7000, 18-105mm lens
Tell us a bit about your daughter and her personality
Emily is smiley, chatty, and the light of my life! She isn’t yet crawling, but can inch and roll across the room in no time. She rarely sits still anymore. She’s also very serious and likes to inspect new things when we’re out and about. Those moments are easy to capture because she always has her tongue sticking out when she’s deep in thought. But with enough funny noises and rounds of the ABCs (her favorite song), I can get her to smile so big. I love the sparkle in her eyes when she’s excited!
Tell us why you love being a mom
It’s amazing to watch Emily grow, experience new things, and just be herself. I could stare at her for hours. I especially love how happy she gets when her daddy or I come back into the room, even if it has been only a minute or two. Every day is different and every day is a gift — even the stressful ones. It’s hard to put into words, but being a mom is the best!
Tell us what sparked your love of photography
My mom! She took a ton of photos when I was growing up and we always had a darkroom in the house. A trick she used to get me to smile was saying “Big smile! No smile! Half smiley!” and by the end I was usually smiling. My mom gave me a Fisher Price/Kodak camera in 1985 and haven’t stopped taking photos since!
Tell us you biggest frustration pre-Momtographie
Photos were either dark and blurry because I wasn’t using a flash, or my baby was washed out but the photo was clear because I was using a flash. Getting a quality photo with my DSLR was sheer luck and I often went back to my point-and-shoot because it was easier.
What ah-ha moments did you have during the class? What were you able to put to use right away?
I learned that shooting in Aperture Priority Mode is a jump start to capturing beautiful images and that once you have the right settings for a particular location and its lighting, they’ll work pretty well for the rest of your photos around that time. Before the class, I didn’t realize how easy it was to tell the camera to do exactly what you want or that making small tweaks could be made very quickly. Right away, I switched to A mode and started seeking out more natural light. Even though there’s still a lot of room for improvement, I haven’t gone back to Auto and love the confidence I gained in the class.
Do you have a favorite photo you’ve taken? Why is it your favorite?
One month after the class, I took some photos of Emily that I love because I felt like I finally had full control over the camera. I was happy with the color, the clarity, the blurry background, and the subject!
