Each day is a new adventure for her.
Today’s challenge?
Sewing.
She longs to create. To make something out of what first appears to be nothing. She builds envelops out of scrap paper, castles out of a bin of legos, and movie scenes out of her food.
Today she’s gotten into my fabric stash.
She sees the possibility of transformation and allows it to guide her free spirited 5 year old heart fully.
I’m in the kitchen adulting. Tidying up, cleaning dishes, thinking about what to cook for dinner.
Then her storm comes blowing in.
Raining ideas, directions, and inspiration on me so hard I know it’s not going to let up anytime soon.
“First we need to find fabric (but I already did that), then we just cut it, and sew it. Then we have a dress! Ta Da!”
She’s convinced that it’s that simple and she can create a masterpiece all on her own. Note: she’s never turned on my sewing machine.
Adulting is saved for another time so I can help her, because the curiosity pouring out of her at the moment is contagious.
So contagious in fact, that CURIOUS is my guiding word for 2016.
(If you want to read any of my past yearly guiding words – I’ve got the last 4 years documented: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)
When was the last time you got insatiably curious about your life?
About who you are in the here and now, and where you are going.
This year I’m in a stage of transformation and transition and instead of fearing it or fighting it or resisting it (as I’m all to familiar with), I’m instead going to simply get curious about it.
For the last 5 years I’ve been mentoring moms in photography.
But my intuitive rumblings tell me that this space is not just about the photography.
It’s about the WHY. Why we seek photography as a creative outlet. Or any art form as a creative outlet for that matter. What’s going on under the surface. How does creating with a camera, or fabric, or yarn, or paint feed our deeper longings.
I’m seeking to expand my role as a photography mentor, into coaching and serving women who are on the creative path. Teaching photography will still be a big part of that. But the human element, the feelings and emotions that we experience are what I’ll be getting more curious about this year.
I hope you’ll join me on the journey.
Because if there’s one this I know about getting curious, it’s that what’s waiting for you on the other side is usually never what you’d expect and oftentimes better than you imagined when you began.
